7, So the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD which He had done for Israel…10, When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD nor the work which He had done for Israel.
The late Chuck Colson, before becoming a noted Christian leader served seven months in a federal prison for his role in the Watergate affair. He was fully aware that he was violating the laws of the land. Yet he refused to acknowledge their authority, which ultimately led to his downfall.
The generation after Joshua had a similar problem. They deliberately refused to acknowledge the LORD’s authority since they were not personally acquainted with His ways. Consequently their refusal to live under His covenantal authority led to their spiritual, moral, and social downfall. Their demise is traced throughout the book.
Departure from God’s authority will ultimately lead to chaos. Once God’s authority is refused it is simply a matter of time before spiritual, moral, and social failure occurs both individually and nationally. Acknowledge God’s authority. Acknowledge His authority since a downward spiral is inevitable if it is refused!
